Local Agency to Celebrate National Community Action Month

Community Action is often referred to as one of the nation’s best kept secrets because there are so many that do not know about the national network of agencies that helped nearly 21 million families in 2010.

Locally, Mid Michigan Community Action has been helping thousands of families annually across Bay, Clare, Gladwin, Mecosta, Midland and Osceola Counties for 45 years. In fiscal year 2010, the agency helped 24,300 families with over $15.8 million in services.

May is recognized as National Community Action month in order to build awareness about the impact these agencies have in local communities.

Mid Michigan Community Action employs over 140 staff who provide over 20 programs including Early Head Start, Head Start/preschool, Weatherization, heat/utility assistance, commodity and emergency food, homeless prevention, foreclosure prevention, homebuyer education, financial self-sufficiency and more.

“Our employees make it happen; they’re the ones out there making a direct impact in people’s lives, Sutton, said. “It’s easy to lose sight of the big picture when you work everyday in the trenches, which is why we use this time to reflect on our mission.”

The goal of National Community Action Month is to both recognize the efforts of local agencies and staff but also build relationships with communities.

“Community involvement is crucial in our efforts to make the biggest impact possible,” Jill Sutton, Mid Michigan Community Action Executive Director said. “We have hundreds of volunteers for Walk for Warmth, food distributions and in our offices—we could not do it without them,” she said.

There are numerous ways for members of the community to become involved with Mid Michigan Community Action. The agency’s website, www.mmcaa.org allows users to sign up for news updates, volunteer, make a donation or find the agency’s Facebook page.

Mid Michigan Community Action is just one of 30 Community Action Agencies in Michigan, and one of over 1000 nationwide. Every county in Michigan is served by a Community Action Agency.
