In order to ensure the continuation of Garfield Manor Senior Housing, the owners and developers, Paul and Joyce Benchley, have transferred their ownership of the complex to Mid Michigan Community Action.
The 26-unit facility, located in the heart of Bay City’s south side, is an affordable housing option for income eligible seniors over the age of 55. The former elementary school was developed by the Benchleys to provide a peaceful and neighborly community for area seniors.
Mid Michigan Community Action became the non-profit partner for the project in 2008, but had limited involvement until the Benchleys approached the organization about assuming ownership. The agency officially became owners earlier in June.
“We are so grateful to Paul and Joyce Benchley and what they have developed,” Jill Sutton, Mid Michigan Community Action Executive Director said. “We have the same commitment to providing affordable housing options for seniors, and we are proud to pick up where the Benchleys left off.”
Garfield Manor has 26, one bedroom apartment homes with central air, oak cabinets, onsite laundry and large community spaces with a variety of activities. As it is designated as low-income housing by the Michigan State Housing Development Authority, income eligibility is 50-60% of the Area Median Income.
“We look forward to working with the residents to ensure that Garfield Manor continues to be a comfortable and vibrant place to call home,” Sutton said.
Mid Michigan Community Action has contracted KMG Prestige to provide onsite management and support to residents of Garfield Manor. Those interested in more information or in applying can call 989-892-4213.
