Mid Michigan Community Action is Single Point of Entry for Bay County Homeless

In order to ensure that homeless individuals and families are provided comprehensive and efficient services, the Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA) requires a single point of entry for homeless assistance in each county. Mid Michigan Community Action is now serving in that role in Bay County.

The Bay County Continuum of Care, comprised of the human service agencies that serve the county’s homeless residents, voted to appoint Mid Michigan Community Action the Housing Assessment and Resource Agency (HARA) in October 2012. The HARA provides the initial assessment of the homeless individual or family and decides which agency is best equipped to serve them.

“We are honored to serve in this role for Bay County,” Deb Schafer, Mid Michigan Community Action Outreach Services Assistant Director, said. “The Continuum of Care is an amazing group of agencies and people—and we are all dedicated to helping those that are homeless and need assistance.”

Mid Michigan Community Action’s Bay City office has a full-time staff member to assist Bay County homeless individuals and families. Those needing assistance can call toll-free 1-855-489-8461 for assistance.

Mid Michigan Community Action and other agencies in Bay County receive Emergency Solutions Grants (ESG) via MSHDA as well as other funding to assist homeless families. The Continuum of Care takes the role of allocating the ESG funding to the various agencies to maximize effectiveness.

In addition to homeless assistance programs, Mid Michigan Community Action also provides heat/utility assistance, monthly and quarterly commodity food assistance, Weatherization and other programs for low and moderate-low income individuals and families.
