Responsibility to our neighbors: An invitation to get to know Mid Michigan Community Action

Submitted by Jill Sutton, executive director for Mid Michigan Community Action Agency

Those in our communities, spanning six counties in the middle of the state, give us the opportunity to change the course of their lives. What a powerful gift.

“Us” is Mid Michigan Community Action; a nonprofit; part of a nationwide network; and working with strong respect, ethics, and collaboration to help people and change lives.

We help families strengthen their ties, tighten their budgets and grow together. We help veterans get a roof over their head and access to benefits they’ve earned. We help seniors stay in their homes, with nutritious food and warmth. We help everyone thrive with what they have and lead them to opportunities that provide them with more.

Throughout the day-to-day rhythm of appointments and paperwork, there are dozens of tiny triumphs. There are high-fives and happy tears. Our people work hard, respect those who come to us for help and create an atmosphere of caring and empowering.

I invite you to learn more about us, and read our 2014 Annual Report. You’ll read about victories in the past year, like warming 400 homes thanks to Walk for Warmth events and providing 52,831 boxes of food to our neighbors. You’ll read about our board representation – spread evenly across our service area and the public, private and economically challenged sectors. You’ll read about 100 households who now save 30-35 percent on their energy bills thanks to Weatherization Assistance and the preschoolers who are learning about their world outdoors and offline on newly installed natural playgrounds.

In short, you’ll read about what we’ve done but, more importantly, I hope you’ll take away why we do what we do. Its no secret nonprofit careers don’t make millionaires. Nonprofit careers do, however, give loads and loads of the warm fuzzies. Those on our team and those who seek our help can attest to that.
