Home Ramp Up: Home Modifications for Older Adults

As we age, small changes in a home can make a big difference in safety and comfort. Home Ramp Up helps eligible older adults make home modifications that support staying independent.

This program focuses on practical changes like ramps, grab bars, or other improvements to reduce fall risks and make daily activities easier.

Who We Serve

Home Ramp Up is designed for older adults who:
  • Live in a home that needs safety or accessibility updates
  • Want to remain in their home safely for as long as possible
  • Live in areas covered by this program (staff can review service areas with you)

We may be able to help homeowners in the following counties:
  • Bay
  • Clare
  • Gladwin
  • Mecosta
  • Midland
  • Muskegon
  • Oceana
  • Osceola

If you’re not sure whether your home or situation qualifies, you can still reach out. Our staff will walk through it with you.

How Home Ramp Up Helps

Based on your home and needs, Home Ramp Up may be able to provide:
  • Ramps or steps that are easier and safer to use
  • Grab bars and handrails
  • Minor bathroom changes to improve safety
  • Other small updates that make moving around the home easier

The exact work depends on your home, your needs, and the program’s guidelines. Not every home will receive the same modifications.

All work is paid for through program funding, not by the person receiving services.

What to Expect

If you are eligible, Home Ramp Up usually includes:

A conversation about your needs
Staff will talk with you about your daily routines, where you feel unsafe, and what changes might help.

A visit to your home
An occupational therapist and contractor will look at your home to see what is possible and what will make the biggest impact.

A plan for modifications
You’ll review the recommended changes. Some items may be required for safety, while others may be based on your priorities and program guidelines.

Professional installation
Approved work will be completed by licensed contractors. Staff will let you know what to expect while the work is being done.

After the work is finished, an occupational therapist will reassess the home. Staff may follow up to see how things are going and answer any new questions.
