Utility Resources

When bills stack up or a shut-off notice arrives, it can feel overwhelming. Our Community Action Center staff can help you explore options to keep your lights, heat, and water on.

We work with households who are behind on utility, water, or sewer bills and may be able to help you understand and explore your options for past-due balances, shut-offs, or other energy-related needs.

More Energy Resources

Energy Help

If you’re struggling to pay your energy bills, we can:
  • Talk through your current bill and any shut-off notices
  • Look at programs that may help with electric, gas, or other home energy costs
  • Help you understand letters or notices from your energy company
  • Connect you with other resources that might be a good fit

Through specific energy assistance programs, we may be able to help with past-due bills or shut-off notices.

Water and Sewer Support

If you are struggling to pay your water or sewer bills, we may be able to help.

Depending on the program and your situation, support may include help with:
  • Past-due water or sewer balances
  • Shut-offs or disconnect notices
  • Certain well or septic repairs or maintenance

Not every household will receive the same type of help. Our staff will talk with you about what may be available for your home.

Who We Serve

Energy and water/sewer resources are available for eligible households in:
  • Bay
  • Clare
  • Gladwin
  • Mecosta
  • Midland
  • Muskegon
  • Oceana
  • Osceola

If you are not sure whether you qualify, you can still reach out. We’ll ask a few simple questions and help you figure out the best next step, even if that turns out to be another program or organization.

How to Get Started

To ask about utility or water and sewer help, call or text the office nearest you:

A staff member will follow up to talk through your situation, explain what may be available, and walk you through the next steps.

Interested in More Energy Resources?

If high energy bills are an ongoing problem, Weatherization may be another way we can help.

Weatherization looks at your whole home to find ways to save energy and improve comfort. For eligible households, the program may provide things like insulation, air sealing, and furnace work at no cost.

You can also mention Weatherization when you call or text and our staff can help connect you to that program.
