Mid Michigan Community Action Receives Funding for Water Repair Assistance Program

9/30/2020

[Farwell, MI—] Mid Michigan Community Action Agency (Mid Michigan CAA) is participating in the statewide Water Repair Assistance Program through the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) as part of Michigan Coronavirus Relief Funding.

The Water Repair Assistance Program will ensure low-income households have access to hot and cold water, a toilet, a tub or shower, a kitchen faucet, and a laundry tub. To meet these needs, the program will provide a variety of plumbing, hot water heater, well, and septic repairs. The program will only run until December 30, 2020. It is important for residents to apply soon to access this program.

“We are eager to begin work on this program,” said Justin Walls, Housing Director at Mid Michigan CAA, “as having access to clean, running water is critical to the health and well-being of every household, especially as we work to reduce the spread of COVID-19.”

Residents in Bay, Clare, Gladwin, Mecosta, Midland, Muskegon, Oceana, and Osceola Counties who do not have access to water in their homes or need plumbing repair should contact the Mid Michigan CAA office nearest them in Bay City at 989-894-9060, Big Rapids at 231-660-0271, Farwell at 989-386-3805, Gladwin at 989-426-2801, Midland at 989-832-7377, Muskegon at 231-557-7622, or Reed City at 231-791-7078.

For appropriate water flow and continuous water safety, water wells need routine maintenance. Well water should be tested yearly for total coliform bacteria and E to assure water quality. coli bacteria by a state-approved laboratory for testing. Additional testing is advised every three years for total dissolved solids, pH, and tests pertaining to land uses that are now taking place or anticipated to take place nearby the well. Additionally, seek tests that will assist in determining the cause of any overt stains, tastes, or smells in the water.

Good afternoon Jerry,

Thank you for reaching out, and we’re sorry to hear about the challenges you’re facing. Unfortunately, our agency is not authorized to provide these services in Branch County. While it sounds like you’ve already connected with your local Community Action Agency and other resources, here are a few additional suggestions that might be helpful:

Michigan 2-1-1: Call 2-1-1 or visit their website (www.mi211.org) to explore additional local programs and resources that might be able to assist.

Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS): You may qualify for assistance through the State Emergency Relief (SER) program for home repairs, including well-related issues.

Community Organizations: Sometimes local churches or smaller nonprofits have emergency funds or connections to other resources that may not be widely advertised.

We hope this information helps, and we encourage you to keep reaching out to organizations in your area that may be able to provide support.

This program sounds like a wonderful initiative to help ensure that households in need have access to essential water services, which are so vital for both health and quality of life. It’s especially important now, with the ongoing concerns around COVID-19, where proper sanitation and hygiene are critical to prevent the spread of the virus. I hope many residents in the eligible counties take advantage of this opportunity before the program ends on December 30, 2020. I also appreciate how the Mid Michigan CAA is working to empower local communities and provide vital support to those who need it most.
